Picking hooks that survive 3 seconds

What we actually look for in the opening frame. Not 'tips'. Patterns.

Watch-through is the only number platforms reward. The first three seconds decide whether a viewer stays. We've reviewed about 14,000 clips across the roster and found four hook patterns that show up disproportionately in the 50%+ watch-through cohort.

Pattern one: the named contradiction. The clip opens with a small, concrete fact that contradicts a common assumption. 'A 60-minute podcast gives you 24 clips, not 4' — works because the viewer wants to know how. The hook is not the answer; it's the contract that an answer is coming.

Pattern two: the closed loop. The first sentence promises a specific number, a specific list, or a specific case. 'There are three reasons brands stop running paid ads after their first clipping campaign.' The viewer stays because they want to see the list close, not because they liked the speaker.

Pattern three: the in-medias-res. The clip starts mid-thought, mid-sentence, with the speaker visibly already arguing for something. The viewer assumes they missed the setup and listens to catch up. It only works if the speaker is genuinely interesting; the technique is not enough.

Pattern four: the show-then-tell. The clip opens with a screen, a chart, or a graphic for the first 2 seconds, then the speaker arrives. The eye is committed before the ear is. This is the easiest pattern to teach a new clipper because it doesn't require any judgement about the source speaker.

What doesn't work, by the way: opening with the speaker's name. Opening with 'today we're going to talk about'. Opening with a question that doesn't have an obvious answer the viewer needs ('what is success?'). And — counter-intuitively — opening with the most outrageous claim, because viewers have learned to recognize the bait and they bounce.

The hook is not the headline. The hook is the contract: 'if you give me three seconds I will give you something specific and you will know what it is by second three.'
